About Us

As an independent, non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York Council for the Humanities relies on contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies for its programs and operations.

The Council's programs reach thousands of New Yorkers throughout the state each year and would not be possible without the consistent support from our donors who help us maintain our deep commitment to all the scholars, critics, philosophers, historians, and poets who bring the Council's programs to life.

Individual Gifts
Whether large or small, once a year or multi-year, each makes a real difference in the lives New Yorkers everywhere.

Stock Gifts and Bequests
Donors may wish to consider the advantages of making a gift of appreciated securities to the Council. If you have held a security for longer than a year, your gift qualifies as a charitable deduction. Contributing stock is one of the few ways a donor can avoid the significant bite of capital gains tax. A gift of stock can provide much-needed support for the Council and offer you financial benefits as well.

Bequests
Designate a specific bequest to the Council when planning your estate. It will help to ensure that our vital work continues.

Workplace Matching Gifts
Matching gift programs are an excellent way to increase the value of your individual donation, at no cost to you. Often, employers will match employee donations to charitable organizations on a one-to-one (or more) basis. Check with your employer to see if your workplace has a matching gift program in place. If so, be sure to send in any necessary forms to the Council when making a donation and we will contact your workplace to obtain the matching gift.
